One Planet, One Ocean

Barcelona, 17-21 November 2014


In 2005 the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, together with the Oceanography Society, organized an International Ocean Research Conference (Paris, June 2005) to discuss the expected developments in marine sciences over the next decade. Now, almost ten years later in light of the advances in ocean sciences and technologies and also after important science-policy developments such as The Future we want (UNCSD Rio+20), the Oceans Compact, and Future Earth, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and the Oceanography Society will convene a new International Ocean Research Conference to discuss and plan the coming decade of international collaboration in marine sciences and technology.

The Conference will provide an overview on the latest trends and achievements in ocean sciences and technologies applied to oceanography and will explore future needs, developments as well as management and governance. The target audience is intended primarily for oceanographers, researchers, engineers, academics, conservation organizations and decision makers that have coastal and marine related responsibilities. The conference will welcome young career scientists.

October 4, 2013 (Halifax, NS) – The Transatlantic Ocean System Science & Technology (TOSST) graduate school is a joint transatlantic graduate research school linking two major centres of ocean research in Maritime Canada and Northern Germany. TOSST complements the German-funded Helmholtz Ocean System Science and Technology (HOSST) research school in Kiel, Germany.

TOSST /HOSST Students have the opportunity to participate in summer schools located in Halifax, Kiel, and Cape Verde; take courses focusing on business development, management skills, and leadership; complete internships in industry, government, and NGOs; and conduct interdisciplinary research in state of the art facilities with co-supervisors in both countries.

Ph.D students from Kiel, Germany are currently visiting the Dalhousie campus in Halifax, Nova Scotia and learning a little bit of everything during their stay. Jim Hanlon, CEO of the Halifax Marine Research Institute (HMRI), had the opportunity to speak with students and provide them insight into the language of business and how, as researchers, they can pitch projects to investors.

“It’s important for researchers to understand all the components of a business plan,” said Mr. Hanlon. “Being able to effectively pitch their ideas to investors will help them secure grants to continue their research in the future.”

Students from Canada and Germany will take their knowledge of business planning and put it to good use when participating next week in a simulated Dragons’ Den experience where they pitch their ideas to a panel of potential investors.

CZC 2014 – abstract submissions now open!

Oral and poster abstracts are now invited on the following sub-themes and should be submitted using the online abstract submission system.

To highlight the Conference theme, Our Coasts: Legacies and Futures, each contributor and participant will be asked to consider the following questions:

  1. What does the ideal future look like to you? Where are the opportunities? What future will you choose?
  2. What role can you play and how can you influence the present and the future? How do we empower, inspire, engage, and revitalize?
  3. How do we deal with the unexpected? What are the risks? How do we prepare? What lessons can we learn from the past?


  • Contribute your research and experience to the leading Canadian forum for coastal and ocean management
  • Present cutting-edge research or share professional experiences that could potentially have a significant impact on the practice of ocean and coastal management in Canada and abroad
  • Provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about emerging issues that affect our coasts
  • Open dialogue among your colleagues and fellow citizens on how to empower active involvement in managing and protecting all of Canada’s coasts.


The deadline for oral and poster abstract submissions is 16 December 2013.

  • Abstracts can be saved in “Draft” status to be finalized until the submission deadline (16 December 2013). Therefore, the submitter will be required to create a user profile.
  • Abstracts for the Conference program will be printed from your electronically submitted material. Therefore, please be sure to carefully check your abstract for content errors, spelling, names, etc. before submitting.
  • Successfully submitted abstracts will be acknowledged with an electronic receipt including an abstract reference number, which should be quoted in all correspondence. Allow 24 hours for your receipt to be returned to you. Notifications of abstract receipt will be sent to the ABSTRACT SUBMITTER’s email address only.
  • The submission of an abstract carries with it the obligation that it is actually presented at the conference by the author or one of the co-authors. You are able to identify the presenter when submitting your abstract. All presenters will be required to register for CZC 2014 and pay the appropriate registration fee.
  • Detailed information on the presentation format and submission procedures (i.e. duration and timing of the presentation, size of poster, accepted file type for digital poster, uploading information, etc.) will be emailed to all delegates whose abstracts have been accepted by the Program Committee by 1 March 2014.
  • Accepted abstracts will be published in the CZC 2014 abstract book and loaded to USB keys which will be distributed to participants, and other Conference sponsors, special guests, etc., together with the Conference registration bag. Accepted abstracts will also be available online on the CZC 2014 website prior to the Conference.
  • All authors who register for the Conference may have their paper considered for publication by one of the supporting journals by indicating their preference at the abstract submission stage. Acceptance of a paper for Conference presentation does not guarantee subsequent acceptance for journal publication.

If you do not receive acknowledgement for your abstract submission or if you wish to make any essential revisions to an abstract already submitted, please DO NOT RESUBMIT your abstract, as this may lead to duplication. I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition 2013-2014

Innovacorp has launched the 2013 I-3 Technology Start-Up Competition. I-3 stands for “Idea, Innovation, Implementation;” the early stages in the commercialization process.

Early stage businesses / entrepreneurs are invited to submit their ideas for a new knowledge-based technology product or service online at www.innovacorp.ca. Round One submissions require a short overview of a business venture, due at 5:00 pm AST on October 18, 2013.

The competition has five geographic zones. Each zone will have a first place award package worth $100,000 and a second place award package worth $40,000. One provincial winner will be selected from the five zone winners, and awarded a $100,000 seed investment from Innovacorp. New this year are sector awards for information and communications technology, life sciences, clean technology and oceans technology.
